| 3RFoam Application:
Algae Management in
Raw Water Reservoirs

Algae growth
can be found in wastewater lagoons, cooling ponds, aquaculture
facilities, ponds and other natural bodies of water. Surface
water treatment plants utilize open air presedimentation basins
(or raw water reservoirs) these suffer from algae growth during
warm weather periods, typically March through November. Typically
a variety of strategies and combinations of strategies are
implemented to control or reduce algae concentrations including:
chemical algicides, aeration, and chemical addition for nutrient
(phosphorous) removal. 3RFoam offers a unique, cost effective
final resolution of this problem.
The only
option available for truly “eliminating” algae would be significantly
altering the environment in which algae can grow and thrive.
Biomanipulation, algicides, and food removal all only offer
marginal success, the one remaining environmental element
available for alteration is sunlight (UV). 3RFoam offers UV
filtering cover made from continuous strips of a composite
media (flotation media covered by a geotextile) approximately
4-5 ft. in width, sewn together, and held in place by burying
the outer edges in the perimeter dikes – similar to a lagoon
or landfill liner. These permeable floating covers are made
by using 3RFoam. The cover, resting on the surface
of the water, allows rainwater to pass through it. Winds will
not lift the cover off the surface of the water, which allows
for a simple anchor system at the perimeter.

The 3RFoamFloating Cover system offers easy deployment,
uses proven materials, and is highly cost effective
in the treatment of algae growth.
